Frequently Asked Questions

The FAQs below provide step-by-step guidance on how to address issues with your vertical balers or compactors.

Please note that this guide is intended for general assistance. If you’re unsure about following the instructions or require further support, we highly recommend scheduling a technician or contacting our friendly team at 1300 665 870.

Bailers
Why won’t my baler start, and why aren’t the lights on?
  1. Check the power supply – Make sure the power’s on at the wall and the isolator on the machine is switched on.
  2. If the power’s on but the lights are still out, it could indicate an issue with the power supply.
  3. If the problem persists, we recommend booking a technician for further assistance.
Why won’t my baler start, and why is the start button flashing?

What do the flashes mean?

One flash: The door switch is reporting an error.

  1. The loading door must be opened fully between each compaction cycle.
  2. Make sure the door is opened and closed properly.
  3. If the flashing persists, this usually points to an issue with the door switch.
  4. If you’re still having trouble, we recommend booking a technician for further assistance.

Two flashes: The emergency stop is activated or hasn’t been reset.

  1. To reset, release the emergency stop by twisting it to the right, then press the green button once.
  2. If the flashing persists, this suggests a fault with the emergency stop circuit, which will require a technician.

Three flashes: The oil temperature is too high.

  1. This indicates the baler has overheated its oil.
  2. Allow the baler to cool down — this can take a few hours.
  3. If the issue recurs, it’s best to book a technician.

Four flashes: The motor temperature is too high.

  1. This means the baler motor has overheated.
  2. Wait for the temperature to return to normal, which may take a few hours.
  3. If the problem happens again, we recommend sending a technician.

Five flashes or more: Servicing is recommended.

  1. This could indicate a critical issue.
  2. To ensure proper functioning, we recommend booking a technician.
Why won’t the press plate run, and why is the orange button illuminated or flashing?

If the press plate is down:

  1. Check that both orange lights are flashing.
  2. If only one light is illuminated, verify that the bottom door clamp is fully open.
  3. If neither light is flashing, this typically points to an issue with the eject safety switch, which will require a technician.

If the press plate is up:

  1. Press the orange button to lower the plate.
  2. If the plate doesn’t lower, this indicates a fault that will need a technician.
  3. If you’re still having trouble, we recommend booking a technician for further assistance.
Why is the baler making more noise than usual?

Is a foreign object trapped between the press plate and the wall of the machine?

  1. Check if a foreign object is trapped between the press plate and the wall of the machine.
  2. If a foreign object is found, remove it.
  3. If you’re unable to remove the object, contact a technician for assistance.
  4. If the noise continues after removal, we recommend that you book a technician to inspect the machine.
Why can’t the baler eject a bale?

Check if the press plate moved at all:

If yes, but the press plate stopped:

  1. Press both orange buttons simultaneously (this is a two-handed operation; releasing one button will stop the baler).
  2. If there’s still no movement, check if both orange lights are on.
  3. If both lights are on but the press plate is not lifting, please book a technician.

If no, the press plate didn’t move:

  1. Check if both orange lights are on.
  2. If both lights are on, please book a technician.
  3. If both lights aren’t on, open the bottom door lock and fully open the door. Are both orange lights on now?
  4. If not, please book a technician.

Did the press plate rise all the way?

Yes:

  1. Check for a foreign object blocking the eject mechanism.
  2. Lower the press plate by closing the doors and pressing the front orange button.
  3. If you cannot close the door, please book a technician.
  4. If there’s no foreign object in the eject system, please book a technician, as this could indicate a failure of components in the eject system.

No:

  1. Press both orange buttons simultaneously (this is a two-handed operation; releasing one button will stop the baler).
  2. If the press plate still won’t rise, please book a technician.
Why is the baler leaking oil?

Is hydraulic oil leaking from the baler?

  1. Check if hydraulic oil is leaking from the baler.
  2. Disconnect the power to the baler to prevent further leakage.
  3. Check if someone has placed a cardboard box with a container of oil inside the baler.
  4. Please book a technician to inspect and resolve the issue.
How do I order a baling tape?
  1. Complete the Consumables Order Form found on the Vertical Balers page of our website.
  2. Once completed, email the form to sales@wastech.com.au.

Someone from our team will get in touch with you shortly to confirm your order.

Compactors
Why won’t the compactor start, and why aren’t its lights on?
  1. Check if the power supply is turned on at the wall and ensure the isolator switch on the machine is also on.
  2. Are the lights on the door switches illuminated? If not, this could indicate a power supply issue.
  3. If the door switches are on but the lights are still off, please book a technician.
Why won’t my blade compactor start, and why is the error/fault light flashing?

1. Is the flash rate constant?

If not, count the short flashes between the long flashes to identify the issue.

One short flash: Container or bin not detected

  1. Check that the bin away switch/laser is functioning properly and that the laser lens is clean (if fitted).
  2. If the issue persists, book a technician.

Two short flashes: Oil leakage detected

  1. Check the oil level. If it’s low, book a technician.
  2. Check underneath the machine for oil on the floor.
  3. If oil is found, book a technician.

Three flashes: Compactor is overfull

Contact your cartage contractor to arrange for the compactor to be emptied.

Four flashes: Front block detected

  1. Check the hopper for any obstructions, such as large foreign objects preventing the blade from moving.
  2. If found, book a technician.

Five flashes: Oil temperature too high or ambient temperature is too high

  1. Allow time for the oil to cool down.
  2. If the five flashes persist after cooling, book a technician.

Six flashes or more: Internal failure detected

This indicates an internal issue. Book a technician immediately.

2. Is the flash rate constant?

If yes, check the following:

One flash every two seconds: Motor overheating

  1. This indicates the motor has overheated and will self-reset once it cools down.
  2. Allow time for the motor to cool.
  3. If the motor cools down and doesn’t reset, book a technician.
  4. If this is a recurring issue, book a technician.

One flash every second: Oil overheating

  1. This indicates the oil has overheated and will self-reset once it cools down.
  2. If the tank is cold to the touch, book a technician, as this may be a fault in the system. (Use caution, as the tank may be as hot as 80°C.)
  3. If the tank is hot and it’s a cold day, book a technician, as this points to a system fault.
  4. If the issue is recurring, book a technician.

Two flashes every second: Pressure issue

This indicates the machine has been running without reaching minimum pressure. The error will reset once you press the emergency stop.

  1. First, check for any oil on the ground. If there is, book a technician.
  2. Second, try restarting the machine. If the issue recurs, book a technician.

If the fault light is solid:

This could indicate one of three issues, depending on the age of the machine:

  1. Low oil: Check the oil level. If it’s low, book a technician.
  2. Oil level is fine: Check all safety interlocks (e.g. emergency stop(s), cage doors, and bin placement).
  3. Both are fine: It may indicate an internal fault with the control system. Book a technician.
Why is the compactor leaking?
  1. Check if the hydraulic oil is leaking from the compactor:
  2. Disconnect the power to the compactor to prevent further leakage.
  3. Check if an oil container is caught in the compactor chamber or if the oil is leaking from the power pack.
  4. If the oil is leaking from the power pack, book a technician to resolve the issue.
Why is the electrical breaker tripping?

This indicates an electrical fault. Please book a technician to inspect and resolve the issue.
